Why your App Store rank moves every day, and when to worry
Keyword ranks move a few places a day for reasons that have nothing to do with you. How to tell normal noise from a real drop, with four signs worth acting on.
If your app sits at 12 for a keyword on Monday and 15 on Tuesday, that is usually noise, not news. App Store search results shift a little every day as apps update, collect ratings and change their listings. Watch the weekly trend, not the daily number, and act when a drop lasts 3 days or more, hits many keywords at once, or follows a competitor passing you.
Why ranks move when you change nothing
App Store search is not a fixed list. Apple ranks results using the text in each listing and how people behave with each app, such as downloads and ratings. Every one of those inputs changes daily, for you and for every app around you:
- Other apps ship updates. A competitor rewrites their subtitle and climbs 4 places. Everyone they pass moves down 1.
- Downloads and ratings shift. A weekend spike or a burst of new ratings for another app reshuffles the middle of the list.
- New apps arrive and old ones leave or get removed.
- The measurement itself varies. Rank trackers, including ours, read Apple's public search results. The order there is a close match for what people see, but it can differ a little from a given phone on a given day.
So a 2 or 3 place move on a single day, for a single keyword, is the normal background hum.
Read the week, not the day
The fix is simple: compare averages. Take the last 7 days of a keyword's rank and compare them with the 7 days before.
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun | 7 day average | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Last week | 14 | 12 | 15 | 13 | 14 | 16 | 13 | 13.9 |
| This week | 12 | 15 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 11 | 12 | 12.3 |
Day by day this keyword looks like it bounces around. The averages show it improved by about 1.6 places. That is the number worth reporting.
Four signs a drop is real
1. It lasts. A drop that holds for 3 days or more is worth a look. A drop that reverses the next morning almost never is.
2. It is wide. One keyword falling is noise. Ten keywords falling on the same day points to something real, like a release that changed your metadata or a problem with your listing.
3. Someone passed you. If a specific competitor moved above you on several words in the same week, that is a cause you can study. Their listing changed, or their downloads did. How to find out which apps outrank you covers how to spot this.
4. It follows a change you made. If you shipped a new subtitle or keyword field and ranks for the removed words fell, the cause is clear. Decide whether the words you gained are worth more than the ones you lost.
A missing rank is not a drop
Sometimes a rank check simply fails: the request times out, or the search service refuses it for a few minutes. A good tracker records that day as unknown. A bad one records it as "not in the top 200", and your chart shows a fake cliff that scares you for nothing.
Altitude never turns a failed check into a drop. Unknown days are shown as gaps, and every chart compares weekly averages so a single bad morning does not look like a crisis. Add your app to see your own trend lines, or see pricing: Free checks weekly and Pro checks every day.
What to do when a drop is real
- Check what changed on your side: version, name, subtitle, keyword field, screenshots, price.
- Check who passed you and what they changed.
- Check the size. Falling from 4 to 9 matters far more than 140 to 160, because almost all taps happen near the top.
- Change one thing at a time, then give it 7 to 14 days.
Questions
How often should I check my ranks?
Daily data is useful, but read it weekly. Checking a single keyword every hour mostly shows you noise.
Why does my rank on my phone differ from my tracker?
Trackers read Apple's public search results from a server, and the order can differ slightly from a specific device on a specific day. Use the tracker for trends and comparisons, not as an exact copy of one phone.
My rank dropped after an update. Should I roll back?
Wait at least a week unless the drop is large and wide. Many changes dip before they settle.
